What Problems Can Autotransfusion Solve?

If it reaches 15%, 4.5 tons of life-saving blood will be saved. On January 10 this year, the "Management Measures for Clinical Blood Use in Medical Institutions (Draft for Comments)" issued by the Ministry of Health proposed that the tertiary hospitals should establish a blood inventory early warning mechanism to carry out and promote autotransfusion.
According to the requirements of the Ministry of Health, the proportion of autologous blood transfusion in Class III and Class A general hospitals should reach 25%, the proportion of autologous blood transfusion in Class III general hospitals should reach 15%, and the proportion of autologous blood transfusion in Class II hospitals should reach more than 10%. However, according to the reporter's inquiry, the proportion of autologous blood transfusion in China is very low, only about 1%. In many countries in Europe and the United States, autologous blood transfusion is widely practiced, accounting for about 20% to 40% of the total blood consumption, and more than 60% in the United States and Australia.
According to the staff of the First Affiliated Hospital of China Medical University, only 15 cases of surgery were performed with autologous blood transfusion last year, which is far lower than the requirement of 25% in Grade III and Grade A hospitals. The staff of Shenyang Central Blood Station said: "If the goal of 15% autotransfusion can be achieved, it will save about 4.5 tons of blood for Shenyang every year, which will effectively solve the problem of blood shortage!"
